Backpacking is one of our staple wilderness activities! Cabins go on at least 3 overnight backpacking trips every summer that range from 1-4 days depending on how old the group is. Campers get to explore the mountains of New Hampshire with their fellow cabin-mates, their counselor, and their trusty trip leader. Cragged Mountain’s trip leaders are certified Wilderness First Responders as well as backpacking/camping experts. They put each camper’s safety first while trying to make the excursion into the wilderness as fun and educational as possible! Campers will be exposed to navigation and route finding skills, cooking gourmet camping meals over a single-burner camping stove, knot tying, appropriate gear needed to be comfortable in the wilderness for multiple days, living with a small group of peers in the woods for an extended period of time, and most importantly leadership and teamwork in remote settings. We aspire to prepare young people to be safe in the outdoors while promoting the importance and the beauty of these natural spaces that they can enjoy during their lifetime.
Campers explore the high peaks and deep valleys of the Presidential range (including Mount Washington), adventure into the heart of the Pemigewasset Wilderness and take on the Pemi Loop, journey to the far reaches of the White Mountains to the Pilot Range, trek sections of the Long Trail, and much more.
