The standard Cragged Summer Camp Sessions capture the core of the CMF experience. Campers arrive on day 1 and set up their beds and belongings in their cabins with their parents and cabin staff. The rest of the morning is spent getting to know their counselors and cabin-mates. After a delicious lunch the whole camp goes to lovely Loon Lake for an all camp swim. The first evening involves a giant, camp wide cookout with a rockin’ assembly afterward to kick off the summer! Camp quickly falls into routine with activities and wilderness trips starting the first week and continuing for the full duration of camp.
See the camp life page or the summer blog for more information and a better idea of what goes on when not out on trips!
Day and overnight hiking, canoeing, and rock climbing trips are central to a camper’s experience at Cragged Mountain Farm. The duration and intensity of the wilderness trips is dependent on the age of the camper and their cabin. For example, the younger boys and girls will infrequently leave camp for more than 2 days at a time while the oldest groups will consistently be out in the woods for 3+ days a week. The challenge of the wilderness experience progresses as campers grow up from summer to summer, building upon skills learned on trips from previous summers. Regardless of age, however, a camper enrolled in the 4 Week Session will take part in at least 2 overnight backpacking trips of 1-3 nights and at least 1 canoe trip of the same duration. In addition to backpacking and canoeing, campers will be exposed to rock climbing, but these will usually be in the form of day trips or sessions on the on-campus climbing wall. We find that the vast majority of children gain new strengths, skills, and confidence from the wilderness trips in which they participate. Cragged provides a great opportunity for children to learn from experienced staff and to develop friendships within a supportive camp community! Our WFR certified Wilderness Trip Leaders hold a high standard of safe decision-making and group dynamics when out in the woods; they are not there to merely complete their trip’s itinerary. They are experienced, supportive and kind teachers who are there to facilitate an incredible wilderness experience for the campers! All trips adhere to Leave No Trace policies, steadfastly following a carry-in carry-out protocol.
We encourage kids who are over the age of 10 to stay for the entire 4 week session! Additionally, while our age range is 7-13, we make exceptions for 6-year-olds to join us as well after a conversation between the parents and the director has taken place to determine if the 6-year-old will be a good fit.
